ʻŌhiʻa Lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha)

The ʻŌhiʻa Lehua is a versatile and dominant tree in Hawaiian forests, known for its vibrant red flowers.  HOʻOMAU RANCH hosts the other colors including yellow, orange, or white blossoms. ʻŌhiʻa plays a crucial role in native ecosystems by providing habitat and nectar for various native birds and insects. The tree is also significant in Hawaiian culture and mythology.  ʻŌhiʻa is the primary timber resource growing in the project area. This native tree is ubiquitous in Hawaiian forests. Its wood was historically used by ancient Hawaiians for making weapons and tools, carving statues and idols, and for temple (heiau) construction. Modern uses include structural supports for buildings, flooring material, fence posts, and firewood.
